Google released today on September 3 the next evolution of its mobile operating system, Android 10, for all of its Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL smartphones.

Update: Android 10 is now also available on unlocked Essential phones. Google's senior director of product management for Android, Stephanie Cuthbertson, also published a "Welcome Android 10" post here with more details on the roll-out.
After months of waiting—it was first talked about at Google's Android Developer Summit conference last November—and no less than 6 intermediate beta versions released to developers since last March, Android 10, previously known as Android "Q", has finally shipped.
To be fair, on its original roadmap published a few months ago, Google did say that it will ship the next version of its mobile operating system in the third quarter of this year which ends in September.
Today, the Silicon Valley company also updated Android's official website with the new logo announced last month and more information about the next evolution of Android.
In addition, over the Labor Day weekend, a leak from two major Canadian mobile carriers, Rogers Wireless, and Telus Mobility confirmed that the official roll-out of Android 10 will begin today, September 3.
However, not all smartphones will be receiving Android 10 today.
Only the owners of Google's own Pixel smartphones will be able to update their device to the latest version including:
Google Pixel
Google Pixel XL
Google Pixel 2
Google Pixel 2 XL
Google Pixel 3
Google Pixel 3 XL
Google Pixel 3a
Google Pixel 3a XL
Moreover, we also expect the Mountain View-based technology giant to release Android 10 to smartphone makers (OEMs) including OnePlus, Nokia and Essential which are usually very quick to update their devices with Android's latest versions and security patches.
Essential has also confirmed that Android 10 is also available on unlocked Essential phones.
Huawei and Honor customers might not be so lucky though and I've reached out to the U.S.-based communications team of the Chinese telecommunications company to find out if Android 10 will be available on existing Huawei devices.
Some of the features that you can expect from Android 10 includes:
Better security updates: With Android 10, you'll get security updates faster and easier as they will also be sent directly to your phone from Google Play, just the same way all your other apps update. So you will get these fixes as soon as they are available and not have to wait for the device maker to update it.
More Privacy Controls: The new privacy controls (now in one place) let you decide how and when data on your device is shared. For example, you can decide what data is stored, like your Web & App activity and for how long, control when your location is shared with apps (all the time, while in use, or never), and finally opt-out of ad retargeting and ad personalization.
New Gesture Navigation lets you go backward, forward, go to the home-screen or see all your open apps with simple swipes and pulls, similar to what you would do on an iPhone or Huawei's EMUI user interface, frankly.
Live Captions automatically captions videos, podcasts, and audio messages—even stuff you record yourself—with a single tap and without ever needing wifi or cell phone data.
