This is another winner. Excellent for spreading on celery sticks or raw crackers. High in minerals and great overall nutrition. Put all ingredients in the food processor and blend until smooth consistency. You could also make it in a small blender or if you're without these tools chop/dice everything and mix in a bowl.

Q Should I soak nuts, dates and the like for smoothies?


A Yes, it’s always best to soak any dried fruit before you consume it because if you don’t it will rehydrate with water taken from your body, which can lead to your dehydration. Use the soak water in your smoothie.


As for nuts, they should be soaked as well to inactivate enzyme inhibitors. Enzyme inhibitors allow nuts to be stored for long periods without spoilage. When the nuts are soaked it’s like the spring rains in nature that bring life back to the nut (seed that it is) so that it may sprout and grow a great tree.


Nuts are much tastier and easier on the digestive system after soaking. If nuts are eaten in their dry (dormant) state then our own digestive enzymes must do the work that nature should be doing. One reason health fails in so many eating a primarily cooked food diet is because sufficient digestive enzymes required to digest such foods cannot be made by our bodies long term. The soak water from nuts should be discarded and the nuts rinsed quickly before eating.

Q I'm on day 2 in raw food detox, and I am quite tired. I also have a headache, any tips?


A First let me say congratulations on doing a detox diet to improve your health. That’s Great, and although it may not seem like it now your body thanks you.


You have two choices with your situation. You can tough it out which will mean that the toxin debris will be leaving your body quicker and be over sooner, or you can slow the detox down so it is easier to handle and function in day to day activities, but will mean the overall detox will last longer.


This also depend s on how healthy you are and what your present toxic load is. Even if you are healthy, your body may require many cleanses over the years to cleanse deep enough to remove toxins from your childhood. My point being although you will see amazing results from a cleanse now, more cleanses will probably be needed down the road anyway so being comfortable now may be important to you.


If you’re eating solid raw food meals now then you can add in more fat which will slow the detox and its associated symptoms. If you’re doing a green smoothie or juice cleanse then you can incorporate more solid raw foods into your cleanse and slow down the detox that way.


Water is the most cleansing, followed by juice, smoothies, whole raw foods, and then healthy cooked foods. Depending where you are on your health journey you can choose what is most appropriate for you in your raw food detox plan. You can add, mix or delete these cleansing foods to achieve the level of cleansing and associated detox symptoms you can handle.


Plenty of pure water is also important to flush the toxins from your system and green foods, which are alkalizing, can be very helpful in buffering the acidity of the toxic waste.

Q Can you have dried fruit on the raw diet?


A Yes, but in moderation, fresh fruit should be your mainstay. Things to remember concerning dried fruit are as follows:


1) Rehydrate the fruit for a few hours or overnight before eating. Otherwise dried fruit will rehydrate itself with water from your body which can lead to your dehydration. If it’s not possible to rehydrate because you’re hiking or something then try to consume it with water rich foods like celery or cucumbers.


2) Make sure the fruit is not treated with sulfates or other preservatives.


3) Dried fruit should be dried at or below approx. 108 degrees Fahrenheit to be considered a raw food.


4) Make sure to brush your teeth after eating dried fruit as it can stick to your teeth and cause problems.

Q Can I can my juiced foods, or smoothies as opposed to freezing. Does this take away any value. thank you! I love your website!


A It would be nice if you could, but unfortunately juices and smoothies should be consumed as soon after preparing as possible to get the full nutritional value. You could take a smoothie made in the morning with you for lunch, or a fresh juice for that matter. Just make sure to fill the container as full as possible to limit the exposure to air. This is not ideal, but better than not at all.


I don't really recommend freezing at all...fresh is best.

How can I clear up my skin from acne?

Q I have acne with lots of scarring. What can I do to clear it up?


A The first things I would do is stop eating dairy, go gluten free, and stop eating junk food. Those three things will probably do amazing things for your skin. I would cut down on any other animal products you are eating, or if you really want change cut them out all together. It may be easier to do this in steps though, you’ll have to decide.


Then of course I would be eating at least 75% raw foods. When I say raw foods, I mean fresh raw fruits and vegetables with very little, if any packaged raw foods.


Juicing would be great if you have a juicer and or green smoothies if you have a decent blender. In just a few short weeks you could stop the new breakouts and begin to heal. The scarring may take some time, but the sooner you get started the sooner you can look forward to at least reducing the amount of scarring you have now.

Basically as you clean up your diet your body will begin to heal itself. The acne is a sign of toxicity, so once you stop putting poisons in your body, your body will react with kindness towards you.

How long can I wait to drink my veggie juice?

Q I have been doing this for about one month now and I am wondering if I am getting all of the benefits because I make my drinks at night and take them to work with me in the morning every day. Is this ok? Am I getting all of the health benefits as though I was making the drinks in the morning?


Also, are frozen fruits ok to use? I throw some in with my veggies and am wondering if they have the same health benefits as fresh?


A Fresh is always best, but better to drink them the next day than not at all. If you fill the container to the top with juice so there is very little if any air then they will last longer nutritionally speaking. As soon as the juice is made it begins to degrade, but still has nutritional value hours later and even the next day. The minerals are still intact, but the quality and quantity of the enzymes, vitamins, and phytonutrients will be degraded.


As for frozen fruit, they might have been riper and fresher when frozen than what’s in the produce section now, however freezing destroys or degrades enzymes, vitamins and phytonutrients. It’s said that freezing destroys about 2/3 of the nutrition. But once again, better to eat some frozen fruit than none at all.


Rule of thumb with juicing and raw foods diet: Use the freshest ripest produce available, and consume as soon after making as possible.
